RADIATION-HYGIENIC ASSESSMENT OF THE STATE OF THE ENVIRONVENT AND THE EFFECTIVENESS OF REHABILITATION MEASURES IN THE AREA OF THE TAILING DUMP

Abstract (English):
The article presents the data of the radiation-hygienic survey of the areas where the tailing dump is located before and after the work on reclamation and conservation. The data obtained show that the shielding of uranium production wastes with phosphogypsum led to a significant decrease in the dose rate of gamma radiation. The activity of 226Ra in inert materials used in the process of reclamation of the tailing dump (imported soils and phosphogypsum) is low compared to the activity of production wastes. The measures taken to rehabilitate the territory of the tailing dump resulted in 12-fold reduction of external gamma-radiation dose rate. The results of the study show the effectiveness of using phosphogypsum as a shield that prevents radon from entering the atmospheric air, and its dependence on the way in which certain areas were sheltered. The mothballed tailings dump is subject to systematic monitoring and periodic radiation control.
