The article discusses the technical characteristics of devices used in customs practice to measure the dose rate of gamma radiation: dosimeters, radiometer dosimeters and search alarm meters. The impact of various technical aspects of dosimetry on the accuracy of dosimetric measurements, in particular, the design features of radiation monitoring devices, software and hardware controls and information processing based on microprocessors, has been evaluated. The results of measurements of the gamma radiation dose rate of a number of point and extended radionuclide sources by various types of devices are presented. It is shown that when using these devices to measure the dose rate of local sources detected during radiation control at the customs border, in some cases the measurement error may exceed the values specified in the operational documentation for the devices.
